CHICAGO CINEMA FORUM presents:

The classic Mexican melodrama with international
superstar Dolores Del Río.
Winner "Best Cinematography" and "Grand Prize"
at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival.

María Candelaria, a role specifically written for Dolores del Río, is the daughter of a prostitute living in Xochimilco, the floating gardens near Mexico City. She and her fiancée seek a new market for María's flowers, but the conservative community doesn't let her escape her past. She seeks the help of a painter who appreciates María's beauty, but tragedy is nipping at their heels.
The gorgeous camerawork of famed cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, frequent collaborator to Luis Buñuel, is best appreciated on the big screen.
Accompanied by Bruce Baillie's classic, lyrical avant-garde short, "Valentin de las Sierras," shot in Chapala, Jalisco.
Programmed by Josh Mabe.
