- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A preeminent work of the Brazilian silent era, LIMITE was the first
and only film by Mário Peixoto, who was reportedly only 18-years old
when he began to direct it. Withdrawn from circulation for decades, it
has achieved mythological status as an influential though seldom seen
experimental classic.
The story of three castaways, it makes
fragmentary connections relating to themes of love, betrayal, and
entrapment. Peixoto's poeticism is hard to place but parts are clearly
influenced by the early French avant-garde and Soviet montage. The
black and white cinematography – by veteran cinematographer Edgar
Brasil – glistens with every frame, and the editing, by Peixoto, has
the instinctual power of Eisenstein, who called the film "a work of
genius". Famed Cinema Novo director Glauber Rocha would fault LIMITE
for lacking "objective reality" – at a time when emerging Brazilian
artists were mainly interested in socially conscious cinema – but
today its way of looking is a breath of fresh air in a media
environment that's saturated with false pretenses and murky digital
aesthetics. Limite recently has been restored by the Cinemateca Brasileria,
VideoFilmes, the Mario Peixote Institute with the participation of Arte
France and has been shown at the Festival De Cannes 2007 in its Cannes
Classics 2007 series.
Screening will be both preceded and followed by a
selection of rare Brazilian music of the 1930s - 50s, from the
collection of DJ Joe Bryl. Music will range from the folkloric,
ritualistic and ceremonial to Brazilian forms of big band, jazz and
samba.
