In between 1957-58, legendary Italian director Roberto Rossellini traveled to India and created INDIA MATRI BHUMI (THE MOTHERLAND), a four part docu-fiction hybrid that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959 and disappeared soon thereafter. Godard, seeing it at the festival, was inspired to write, “[Rossellini] has already gone on from the point which others may perhaps reach in twenty years. INDIA is the creation of a world." Scarce for over 40 years, INDIA has been frequently cited as one of Rossellini's greatest films by the few who have been privileged to see it. Chicago Cinema Forum is proud to present the local premiere of the complete French language version of INDIA, with new English subtitle translation by noted film scholar Tag Gallagher. (1958, India/Italy/France, 90 min, DVD).
